CPU – The CPU, or central processing unit, is the main component of your desktop PC. It’s what runs everything and what tells the other components what to do, like the brain in the human body. In today’s gaming rigs, you’ll often find two brands – AMD and Intel. They’re both great in certain categories, and it’s a matter of preference. In the past few years, AMD has consistently given better performance-per-price, and that’s why you’ll see their Ryzen CPUs in entry-level or midrange builds. However, in the high end, Intel’s Core i7 and Core i9 are dominating. Though that may change with the release of the new Ryzen CPUs.

GPU – The GPU, or graphics processing unit, is responsible for processing the visuals and is the key component for good gaming performance. A good dedicated GPU can give you high framerates in many games, so this is a component you don’t want to cut corners on. The market these days is dominated by Nvidia, with few pre-built gaming PCs coming with AMD’s graphics solutions. You will find the GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1060 in the entry-level and midrange market, whereas the high-end PCs all come with Nvidia’s latest ray-tracing enabled graphics cards, such as the RTX 2060, RTX 2070, RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti.

RAM – The RAM, or random access memory, is responsible for multitasking and keeping your programs and games open. The more RAM you have, the more apps you’ll be able to keep running at the same time. Games nowadays all require quite a bit of RAM, so 8GB is the bare minimum in a gaming PC. If you want to be multitasking, a smart decision would be to go for 16GB, or even 32GB for heavy multitasking.

Motherboard – The motherboard hosts all the components of a PC. There are slots for the CPU, the GPU, the RAM, as well as ports for attaching the storage. You’ll find ratings that indicate how good they are – Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum etc. The thing about power supplies is that if one dies from a power surge, a lower end PSU is much more likely to also destroy some of the components it’s powering as well. Good PSUs have protection against this, so a good PSU is a smart choice.

Case and thermal solution – Unlike what many people think, the case isn’t just for housing your components and being visually appealing. A good case should have a good airflow solution to keep your components cool, as well as have enough room and organization for clean cable management. It should also fit the components you’re using, with the biggest potential issue being today’s large graphics cards. The thermal solution is either an air cooler or a liquid cooling solution. Air coolers are decent, but if you’re overclocking, you’ll need either a high-end air cooler or a liquid cooling solution.
